Waitomo Caves
Located just over 2 hours’ drive from Auckland, Waitomo caves have proved to be one of the most tourist attractions in New Zealand. Waitomo is a Maori word made up of two parts, ‘Wai’ which translates as water and ‘tomo’ which means entrance or hole. Waitomo can be translated as the “stream which flows into the hole in the ground”. These caves are famous for their glowworm population and unique geological formations. You are not only watching beautiful glowworms lying down from the rocks but also learning about the fascinating story of the glowworms, the cave formations and the Waitomo region. This is truly unmissable for all of the tourists visiting New Zealand.
